The 90th edition of the Battle of the Saints Annual encounter played for the Maurice J. Legoc Memorial Trophy between St. Joseph’s College and St. Peter’s College, culminated in a draw on the 23rd of March at the SSC grounds in Colombo.

While St. Joseph’s College had a historical advantage with more victories, St. Peter’s claimed the trophy this year as they were the last victorious team in 2016, ensuring the trophy remains at Bambalapitiya.

St. Peter’s College began the match by batting first and scored 270 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their allotted 60 overs. In response, St. Joseph’s College made 228 runs for the loss of 5 wickets before declaring their innings on the second day.

On the second day, the Josephians resumed play at 91 runs for the loss of a wicket. Hirun Kapurubandara, who was unbeaten on 53 runs overnight, fell short of a century as he was dismissed for 94 off 108 balls, including 9 fours and 4 sixes. Abhishek Jayaweera contributed 80 runs off 151 balls with 4 fours and a six, and their partnership of 153 runs added to the record books.

St. Peter’s skipper Vishen Halambage took 3 wickets with his leg-spin bowling. St. Joseph’s made a strategic declaration, conceding a 42-run lead. In the third innings, St. Peter’s College faced pressure as the Josephians attempted to dominate.

Dilana Damsara, the first-innings hero for St. Peter’s, scored another half-century on day two as the Peterites reached 204 for the loss of 9 wickets in 63 overs. Seamer Maanasa Madhubhashana and left-arm spinner Yenula Dewtusa took 7 wickets collectively for St. Joseph’s.

Needing 247 runs to win, St. Joseph’s began their final innings. Hiran Jayasundara and Hirun Kapurubandara remained unbeaten with 38 and 27 runs respectively, ending the match with St. Joseph’s at 75 for 1.
