18th Battel of the Gold

The rivalry between these two schools dates back decades, rooted in a friendly yet intense competition that transcends mere sports. It encompasses pride, honor, and the desire to excel in every aspect of student life. The Battle of the Gold typically features cricket, rugby, athletics, and other sports, with students from both schools eagerly participating and showcasing their talents.

Cricket, being a beloved sport in Sri Lanka, takes center stage during this battle. The atmosphere at the cricket grounds is electric, with stands filled to capacity, and adorned in the respective school colors. The rivalry is palpable as players take the field, cheered on by their fellow students, alumni, and supporters.

Over the years, both D.S. Senanayake College and Mahanama College have produced outstanding cricketers who have gone on to represent Sri Lanka at International levels. From D.S. Senanayake College, legendary Aravinda de Silva, Hashan Tillakaratne, Naveed Nawaz, Isuru Udana, and Young cricketing star Binura Fernando, who represents the national squad. Mahanama College produces Danushka Gunathilaka, current national red ball captain Dhananjaya de Silva This adds to the prestige and competitiveness of the Battle of the Gold, as each team strives not only for victory but also to uphold the legacy of their school’s cricketing tradition.

Apart from cricket, other sports also play a significant role in this rivalry. Rugby matches between the two schools are fiercely contested, with hard tackles, strategic plays, and passionate displays of sportsmanship defining each encounter. Two colleges meet for their battle on 29th & 30th March 2024 at SSC grounds,for the 17th time.
